Our History & Our Team

Two is better than one, three is better than two... and a handful of women supporting one another is even better

Josephina Lace cannot separate its own history from that of the making of Renaissance lace in the Northeast of Brazil. In the same way, the history of the Brazilian Renaissance lace cannot be told without revealing the real “history makers”, the lacemakers. They are history themselves. Their exquisite handmade work has its origins in Venice in the sixteenth century and was taken to the Northeast of Brazil by Catholic nuns. It soon gained freedom outside the walls of the convents and has since been spread, improved and liked by households and brides especially from the middle-cass.

The making of the Renaissance lace is a work that requires skill, love and patience. Depending on the size and kind of stitching used, a lacemaker might work for up to eight months or a year on a single piece. Sell their pieces for a deserved and fair price is not easy, especially in the countryside where most of them live.

Josephina Lace aims to put together a bigger group of women lacemakers (they are wives, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters or divorcees with children) and create an association so that they can support and encourage one another, improve their trade skills and be able to get financial support from outside their group.

In Poção, in the state of Pernambuco, making Renaissance lace is a tradition passed on from mother to children and even some men make it. There are ladies and gentlemen who are in their 90s and still draw or make the lace.

The Lacemakers

The Lacemakers

The making of Renaissance Lace has been a tradition which travelled all the way from Venice to the Northeast of Brazil in the 16th Century and it is still growing strong! The tradition has been passing on from generation to generation and occupying the hands and "hearts" of grandmothers, mothers and daughters (and, sometimes, grandfathers, fathers and sons) with the making of GORGEOUS pieces of garments for brides, babies and linens. There's nothing these ladies cannot make! You think, they make! And it's beautiful, and it's glamorous, and it's romantic... .
